May 17th Constitution Day - Syttende Mai

Norway is a small and still fairly young country, and independence and the flag are very important, but not in an arrogant way. Although full independence did not come until 1905, it is the signing of the constitution on 17 May 1814 (grunnlovsdagen) that is celebrated. The day may start with cannons, then a Childrens parade, lunch with friends, and more parades in the afternoon.
